"Hekate"
Hekate is not just an interesting name - she is special for several reasons. First, she lays a beautiful blue egg. Unfortunately, she's not very consistent in where she lays them. Sometimes she drops an egg in the middle of the yard, once on a cement walkway, and countless other inconvenient locations. She took to a flower pot for a while and that wasn't bad, but it seemed like a vulnerable location for her to be hanging out - in plain view of hawks!
Secondly, Hekate is generally a sweet hen albeit somewhat skittish. But she has good reason since pretty much every other hen picks on her. She always gets last eats from communal feeding, and literally isn't allowed anywhere near several more dominant hens - particularly Bluey. Hekate has become a favorite (along with Bernice, of course!) and seems to know it. She gets special treatment - snacks, guarding and even a petting here and there. She seems to understand if she plants herself right between our feet then she's safe for a moment! Otherwise, she tends to go off doing her own thing. Which doesn't bode well for safety, but so far so good!
Thirdly, as an Americauna, she shares a lot of features with Hawkeye (RIP), our Easter Egger who is no longer with us. We miss Hawkeye and can see a lot of similar mannerisms between the two - the way they dart around and go about their business.
